The 1xv travelled to Dumfries & Galloway on Saturday to face Stewartry. A series of positive results and performances has seen the 1xv slowly climb the table. Collecting points at Stewartry was crucial to add to the table tally.
It was Stewartry’s first home game of 2025 and looking to rectify the 29-19 defeat at Whitecraigs in October, a tough game awaited.
Whitecraigs landed the first blow scoring early on 5 minutes to lead 0-5. Stewartry levelled up on 16 minutes. The teams couldn’t be separated through the first half with the score close 5-12 at half time.
Stewartry scored an easy try early in the second half and converted for 12-12. The home team went momentarily ahead for the first time in the game 19-17 on 59 minutes before Whitecraigs scored their fourth try, unconverted, to secure the try bonus point then converted a penalty on 78 minutes to restore the lead 19-25 with 2 minutes of the 80 to go.
Whitecraigs found themselves in the unsettling situation of defending inside their 22 metre and the victory at their finger tips in the final minutes against a resilient Stewartry.
Stewartry sneaked in with a try at the left corner flag in the 80th minute to go a point behind 24-25 leaving a testing difficult conversion from wide left for victory.
Breathes were held and nails bitten from both sets of supporters and players. The Stewartry conversion was elevated and well struck. It dipped just inside the right post over the bar for 2 points and a dramatic finish, 26-25.
Whitecraigs disappointed, but didn’t travel home empty handed gaining 2 points for a try and losing bonus.
Next week Whitecraigs welcome unbeaten league leaders Strathmore. Kick off is 2pm followed by England V Scotland at 4.45pm.
Look forward to seeing you there to cheer on two victories!
Meanwhile at Whitecraigs the 2xv stormed to victory versus GU Hills 56-28 in their penultimate league game of the season now poised nicely in second place on 48 points just two points behind league leaders Strathendrick on 50 points.
